Technical Exchange Networking Lunch meeting
On April 20, 2017, AAAEA-CA held a very successful technical exchange and networking lunch meeting at the Offices of the City of Los Angeles’ Bureau of Sanitation. Over 30 professional joined the meeting. The topic was “Industrial and Municipal Stormwater Compliance – from challenges to opportunities.” We had 3 great speakers representing our industry. Dr. Shahram Kharaghani, Watershed Program Manager for the City of Los Angeles, discussed the City’s stormwater compliance program including the Enhanced Watershed Management Plans that rely on capture, infiltration and reuse while providing multi-benefits. Mr. Paul Alva, Stormwater Program Manager with the County of Los Angeles, discussed the County collaboration with other cities on a watershed based stormwater management that provides water resiliency. Mr. David Renfrew, Director of Water Resources with Alta Environmental, discussed the challenges and opportunities for industrial and commercial facilities for stormwater compliance. It was clear that there is huge needs for the compliance with the stormwater program and additional funding, collaboration and innovation is needed. The audience had an engaging discussion with the speakers.
AAAEA-CA will have us mid year dinner meeting on May 12, 2017. We are honored that our guest speaker will be Jim Herberg, General Manager of Orange County Sanitation District (OCSD). OCSD, under the leadership of Mr. Herberg, is leading the way to more water reuse and innovative solution focused on resource recovery.
We are also excited that Mr. Phil Washington, CEO of the LA Metropolitan Transit Authority, has accepted our invitation to be our keynote speaker at our end of year Hala on November 2, 2017.
Semi-Annual Networking Dinner – Friday May 12th

We will be joined by Mr. Jim Herberg, P.E., BCEE, General Manager – Orange County Sanitation District, as our keynote speaker for the night. Mr. Jim Herberg is General Manager of the Orange County Sanitation District. Prior to becoming General Manager, he was Director of Engineering responsible for the District’s biosolids program, environmental compliance, and source control permitting in addition to managing the planning, design, and construction of the District’s $2.6 billion capital improvement program.
He is a registered Civil Engineer in the State of California and is a Board Certified Environmental Engineer by the American Academy of Environmental Engineers. Jim holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Oklahoma, and a Master’s degree in Civil Engineering from Long Beach State. Jim has been with the Orange County Sanitation District since 1995.
